Law Society of Kenya (LSK) calls out Tanzania over denial entry of two Advocates of the High Court of Kenya
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 19 – The Law Society of Kenya has condemn illegal and arbitrary denial of entry into Tanzania of two of its members, Ms Martha Karua, Sc, and ms. Gloria Kimani alongside miss. Lynn Ngugi who were detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport on 18 May 2025 noting that authorities at the airport has failed to provide reasons for the act.
LSK notes that denial of entry of the two Kenyans advocates is not only irrational and discriminatory but an affront to the international relationship among East Africa states adding that government of Republic of Tanzania is in breach of its obligations and must act accordingly to rectify animosity against citizens of Kenya.
“We note that the denial of entry of the two advocates of the High Court of Kenya comes against the backdrop of and is related to the recent heinous violation of rights against Hon. Tindu Antipas Lissu an advocate and former Tanganyika Law Society President”, reads a statement by Law Society of Kenya.
LSK further states that the two advocates of the Hight Court of Kenya who were detained are members of the East African Law Society with liberty to, without limitation engange with EALS and participate in its activities including providing legal support in advocacy efforts.
“The government of Tanzania interference with that status is an illegality and a violation of rights of the two advocates, further the lack of justifiable reasons for their detention other than represent a victim of government oppression is tantamount to discrimination and contrary to both EAC treaty and Banjul charter”, the statement reads further.
They further call on Attorney General of Tanzania to take immediate intervening measures to rectify and reserve the outright affront of justice and human rights.
“We call on the State Department for Foreign Affairs to engage with Government of Tanzania with a view of resolving this matter and ensuring such retroggresion to the process we have made as a community does not persist”.
