CSOs lauds EACC crackdown on Kiambu County Officials, calls on ODPP and Judiciary for swift prosecution

KIAMBU, Kenya, Apr 16 – Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have raised an alarm over countinues growth of corruption in County governments citing repetitive adverse of Audit reports by Auditor General.

They noted that in Kiambu County since current administration took power there have been adverse audit reports on each succesive financial year with Auditor General lamenting that failure by relevant authorities to take action against reported graft was making perpetrators bolder and succesive as the reports showed a continued trend in embezzlement.

Bunge la Mashinani under Kiambu County Social Accountability Network (KISANET) organized citizens to demand immediate action from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) after Auditor General findings dissemination to the public under the ‘tupigane na ufisadi’ project.

EACC on tuesday 15 April 2025 raided both offices and residences of suspected County officials including Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and several CECs where cash amounting to over Ksh 15 million both in Kenyan shilling and USD were recovered.

“We laud EACC for the bold action and demand swift action to follow to bring those found culpable to hook, we want to see convictions”, they said.

In addition they advocate for chapter six of the Constitution be strictly enforced to vet all public officials and political aspirants with a particular focus on integrity, wealth declaration and unexplained assets.

They further called on urgent enactment of whistle-blower Protection Bill (2023) and fast tracking of legislative reforms to minimize delays in corruption case prosecution and access to information act (2016) be effectively implemented at all government levels to enhance transparency and accountability.

“Government must ensure independence of critical Oversight institutions, including EACC, ODPP and the Judiciary by funding and safeguarding them”.
