Kenya Railways Corporation marks 8th Anniversary of Madaraka Express
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 11 – The Kenya Railways Corporation celebrated the 8th anniversary of the Madaraka Express a milestone event in the transformation of rail transport in Kenya.
China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, Kenya Railways Chairman Abdi Bare and Managing Director, Philip Mainga graced the ceremony at Nairobi Terminus, Syokimau.
The Board Chairman Kenya Railways Mr. Abdi Bare while speaking during the 8th Anniversary celebrations of Madaraka Express reflected on the evolution of passenger service operations.“
“We started this journey with one express train each day then introduced the Inter-County train, Afternoon and Express Night time ,” said Mr. Bare.
Since its inception Madaraka Express Passenger Service has transported over 15.3 million passengers while the Freight Service has transported over 39.78 million tonnes.
“These milestones highlight the significant role of rail in connecting Kenyans and supporting national logistics over the past eight years”, he added.
As part of the celebrations, the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Amb. Guo Haiyan, was taken on an interactive tour of Nairobi Terminus the tour showcased the achievements of Madaraka Express Passenger and Freight service in advancing modern rail transport.

Philip Mainga, Managing Director Kenya Railways lauded both internal and external stakeholders for their unwavering support to the rail transport in the country noting that since its inception the company has progressed significantly.
The SGR project primarily focused on the Mombasa-Nairobi section was designed to replace the existing, outdated railway and improve transportation efficiency.
Mr. Bare noted that there are plans to extend the SGR to other parts of the country and connect with neighbouring nations, further enhancing regional integration and trade.
China’s Ambassador to Kenya Ms. Guo Haiyan express excitement to join the corporation in celebrating nearly 3,000 days of safe and smooth operations of the Madaraka Express(SGR) A shining symbol of the alignment between “Kenya Vision 2030” and the“Belt and Road Initiative”in action.
“This railway has connected people, boosted trade, and transformed lives It’s not just a track of steel it’s a bridge of friendship May this railway of friendship have an even brighter future Come take a ride”, stated Ambassador Haiyan.
Additionally, Kenya Railways awarded their loyal customers who have frequently used the Madaraka Express for the eight years together with a mother who made headlines by delivering a baby on-board each was awarded with a return Premium class ticket.
Furthermore, the Freight Service has played a vital role in reducing the cost of doing business by offering a faster, high-capacity alternative for cargo movement.
“This has not only improved logistics efficiency but also significantly helped decongest the Port of Mombasa, allowing enabling smoother cargo flow”, added Mr. Mainga.
The Passenger Service has enhanced mobility for millions of Kenyans providing a safe, comfortable and affordable option for long-distance travel, the ripple effects have been evident with increased domestic tourism, the growth of small businesses and improved access to trade and services in towns along the corridor.
“For eight years, Madaraka Express has not only moved people and goods it has moved Kenya forward”.
