NAIROBI, Kenya, July 21 – Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) led by Chairperson Ms Rahab Muiu, Hon Zipporah Kitonny Acting Patron and other MYWO National officials gathered with heavy hearts to honor and eulogize beloved Patron, Hon. Dr. Mama Phoebe Asiyo, OGW, CBS a distinguished stateswoman, a trailblazer, a matriarch, and an unwavering champion for the rights and dignity of women in Kenya.
While addressing the media at MYWO offices they stated that Phoebe’s life was a testimony to that belief. she sacrificed, she persisted and dared to dream of a time when women would sit at decision-making tables not as guests, but as equals.
“Today, we pause to remember her as a pioneer of the women’s empowerment journey in our country; a fearless voice that spoke when others remained silent, and a towering figure whose leadership helped shape the course of women’s participation in public life. Mama believed deeply in women’s leadership”, they said.
One of her most defining moments was leading a delegation of women to Kapenguria to meet the founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta noting that it was not an ordinary visit but an act of bold negotiation at a time when women’s voices were barely acknowledged.
“Because of her courage, the seeds of affirmative action were sown we enjoy the fruits of that labour through the increased presence of women in leadership and governance”.
Mama Phoebe has been eulogized as more than MYWO Patron She was a compass and conscience, being MYWO first African President, a position she pursued passionately because she understood that the African woman’s story could only be authentically told by one of her own.
Additionally, they noted that the late Phoeba believed, fervently, in unity and was herself a living sign of togetherness Her guidance was clear.
“MYWO must remain united in service of Kenyan women and the nation at large.Mama was also a woman of immense wisdom”.
A tireless champion of women’s rights and leadership, Hon. Asiyo will be remembered as one of the longest-serving women in Kenya’s Parliament and a trailblazer whose voice transformed national and international conversations on gender equality.
“As we mourn Mama, let us also draw strength from the legacy she leaves behind. A star has gone before us but it has not vanished it lights the path for the rest of us. Let us be inspired by her life and challenged by her message”.
Mama Phoebe was also celebrated as no situation was ever too complex for her discerning mind, nurturing heart, constant counsel, her affirming words and the many moments of quiet encouragement she regularly shared.
MYWO urged that the foundation laid by Hon. Asiyo should never be forgotten but be honoured in her memory by building upon it, faithfully and courageously.
