Nairobi Hospital marks international nurses week, calls for conducive working environment for health professionals
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 13 – The Nairobi Hospital marked end of International Nurses week in a moving ceremony which brought together Nurses, Healthcare professionals and leadership to pay tribute to pivotal role nurses play in Kenya’s health sector.
This year’s celebration, themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies” focused on often disregarded economic impact of nursing care and the essential role nurses play in healthcare systems.
Dr. Susan Njuguna, Dean of Nursing at Daystar University emphasized need of creating a context in which nurses can flourish both professionally and personally.
She further advocated for policies and workplace practices that facilitate nurses physical, mental and emotional well-being including mental health initiatives, stress management assistance and physical safeguarding measures.

“Health facilities should go beyond the rhetoric of celebration and institute structures and systems that empowers nurses , such as adequate staffing, access to emotional support and effective mechanisms for service delivery, more general issues such as health financing and infrastructure shortages that impact nursing care”, said Dr. Njuguna.
In addition, she called for improvements in healthcare infrastructure including adequate medical supplies, efficient health financing systems, effective communication tools and consistent opportunities for professional development.
Nairobi Hospital CEO, Felix Osano reiterated hospital’s commitment to tangible support for nurses revealing that since January 32 nurses have been sponsored to attend National Nursing Conferences.
Mr. Osano further noted that 56 nurses have been certified Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) while 5 nurses will be sponsored to attend International Nurses Council Conference in Finland in June 2025.
He further revealed hospital’s intention to sponsor higher diploma studies in various specializations of nursing from August 2025.
“The Hospital is committed to not only appreciating nurses by word of mouth but also by showing it through tangible action and opportunity “, said Mr. Osano.
Ag Director Nursing Services, Margaret Muiyoro recognised nurses as anchor of any hospital noting that they are innovative and does commendable work.
The ceremony concluded with Mercy Mukubwa, Senior staff nurse at the hospital named winner of 2025 International nurses week with over 20 nurses honoured for outstanding service and leadership.
