IEBC Urged to Hit the Grassroots as Low Turnout Plagues Voter Registration Drive

MURANG’A, Kenya, Nov 15 – Ahadi Kenya Trust Chief Executive Officer Mr. Stanley Kamau has raised an alarm over low turnout of voter registration execise calling upon both National and County leaders to mobilize locals to turn up and register as Voters ahead of the 2027 General election.

Mr. Kamau while speaking during voter registration sensitization drive in Gitugi grounds in Mathioya Constituency in Murang’a county noted that the voter registration turn out has been low since Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commence the drive.

He highlighted that IEBC headquarters especially in Mathioya Constituency is too far from the common mwananchi as they cannot afford bus fare or any mode of transport to go and collect or register as Voters.

Further, He appealed to organizations across the country to support the IEBC by helping them reach communities located far from registration centres, noting that limited funding may hinder the commission from accessing remote areas.

“We have brought the service closer to the people and I want to urge leaders, Member of Parliament, Governor,  Women representative, MCAs and all other people of goodwill to consider facilitating IEBC officials to the grassroots so that every person can be able to register”, said Mr. Kamau.

“If you are talking about two-term or one-term the best way to talk about it and achieve it is through the ballot, No need of fighting or calling each other names the only way you can be able to bring change in this nation is through the ballo”, He added.

Additionally, ahead of the 2027 General election Mr. Kamau urged residents to maintain peace and unity and cease from violence, or intimidation but only use the power of the ballot to bring change.

During the voter registration sensitization drive in Gitugi grounds over 300 locals majority youth turned up to register.

He further called for inclusivity noting that it is essential to bring services to the people not leaving behind people living with disabilities and the elderly who cannot be able to walk far distances.

“If we are serious about voter registration, we must be serious about mobilizing IEBC to come to grassroots by whatever means”.
