Mogo Partners with Kisumu Law Enforcement to Fight Boda Boda Theft in 47-County Security Drive
KISUMU, Kenya, Sep 19 – Asset financier Mogo has donated motorcycles and office furniture to key police stations across Kisumu County, launching a nation-wide effort aimed at boosting police mobility and curbing the rising surge of motorcycle theft.
The donation sees Central Police Station, Obunga Police Station, and the Nyanza Regional Police Commander’s office each receive a motorcycle to enhance quick-response capabilities and local patrols.
Additionally, both stations along with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCIO) office received essential operational furniture, including modern desks and office chairs.
Motorcycle theft has increasingly evolved into a sophisticated criminal enterprise across East Africa. Stolen assets are frequently smuggled across international borders into neighboring countries including Tanzania, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, severely complicating cross-border tracking and recovery efforts.
According to a study by the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) on Organised Criminal Gangs:
24.3% of national respondents linked gang activities directly to the theft of motorcycles and boda bodas while 71.1% of respondents noted that criminal gangs rely heavily on motorcycles to enhance their own tactical mobility.
The NCRC report underscores the urgent need to adequately equip security agencies with the logistical capacity and operational resources required to counter these emerging criminal networks.
Speaking during the handover event in Kisumu, Mogo representative Branton Mutea emphasized the severe socioeconomic ripple effects caused by motorcycle theft on everyday households.
“When a motorcycle is stolen, the consequences go beyond the loss of a physical asset; it completely disrupts a family’s ability to earn a daily living,” Mutea said.
“Security officers are key partners in this fight. Supporting them with mobility and infrastructure strengthens their capacity to respond to incidents rapidly.”
Mutea confirmed that Kisumu serves as the launchpad for a larger national initiative, with plans to expand the equipment donation program across all 47 counties in Kenya.
Receiving the donations, Nyanza Regional Police Commander Peter Oburu highlighted the role of physical mobility in modern crime prevention and community engagement.
“Mobility is a vital component of effective policing. These motorcycles will allow our officers to conduct frequent patrols, respond swiftly to distress calls, and engage more closely with local communities,” Oburu noted.
He urged boda boda operators and members of the public to maintain active communication channels with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities promptly.
