Nairobi Hospital Trains Boda Boda Operators in Basic Emergency Care

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 15 – The Nairobi Hospital in collaboration with the Cicely McDonnell College of Health Sciences successfully completed the training and certification of over 50 boda boda riders and officials drawn from the boda boda rider association, NTSA and Nairobi Area Traffic Commandant with Basic emergency training course.

The Emergency course is part of The Nairobi Hospital’s year-long 70th Anniversary celebrations and is geared towards directly bridging a critical gap in Kenya’s emergency response ecosystem.

By transforming boda boda operators into certified first responders, this program leverages their strategic presence on the road to bridge the critical gap in emergency medical services the initiative aims to strengthen the country’s pre-hospital emergency care system and improve survival outcomes for accident victims.

Through the programme, participants were trained on essential lifesaving skills, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic first aid, bleeding control, safe patient handling, Motorcycle safety principles, and emergency scene management.

The course also emphasised the importance of timely coordination with formal emergency medical services to ensure that victims receive appropriate care as quickly as possible.

The Nairobi Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mr. Felix Osano while speaking during the certification ceremony noted that empowering community first responders is a critical step toward strengthening Kenya’s emergency care ecosystem.

“Boda boda riders are often the first people on the ground when road traffic accidents occur By equipping them with basic lifesaving skills, we are not only improving the chances of survival for victims but also strengthening the broader emergency response chain in our communities”, said Mr. Osano.

“As we celebrate 70 years of service, The Nairobi Hospital remains committed to initiatives that create safer and healthier communities”, He added.

The Chairman of the Boda Boda Riders Association welcomed the initiative and emphasised the importance of such partnerships in enhancing road safety and saving lives.

“Boda boda riders interact with the public every day and are frequently present when accidents happen. This training equips our members with the knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately in emergencies before professional medical teams arrive”.

Kenya continues to face a high burden of road traffic injuries, with thousands of accidents reported each year.

Strengthening community-based first response is increasingly recognised as an important component in improving emergency care outcomes.
