SportPesa Tujiamini Initiative Awards KES 1 Million to Coast Region Change-Makers Idd Munga and Elizabeth Muema

MOMBASA, Kenya, Dec 7 – Two exceptional innovators from the Coast region, Idd Munga and Elizabeth Muema, have been jointly honored with the prestigious KES 1,000,000 SportPesa Tujiamini Gold Prize, with each recipient securing a substantial KES 500,000 grant.

This pivotal funding is earmarked to significantly scale up their respective projects, which are currently making profound, life-altering impacts across the communities of Kilifi and Mombasa counties.

Their initiatives were uniquely recognized for their compelling strong community impact, demonstrably clear vision, and sustainable model for long-term positive change.

In Rabai, Kilifi County, Idd Munga’s is tackling environmental degradation and community vulnerability through a simple but powerful model the project plants trees to restore the semi-arid landscape, then uses the income from mature trees to provide sanitary pads to young  girls and women in the community.

The KES 500,000 award will help him scale his next steps include installing water tanks to sustain seedlings, acquiring additional seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture and constructing a small shelter that can host community training sessions.

Additionally, he is also bringing local youth together to revive the Rabai Football Club and create more opportunities for growth and mentorship.

Elizabeth Muema fellow Gold winner in Mombasa is empowering women and youth through her initiative, LaDenser Crochets, which teaches crochet as a creative skill for income generation.

Her workshops and online tutorials support stay-at-home mothers, jobseekers and young creatives who want to turn their craft into small businesses.

Reflecting on her journey, Elizabeth shared that after Covid, business declined and the cost of operations made it difficult to stand on her feet again.

“Winning KES 500,000 through Tujiamini has given me the chance to strengthen my business model, purchase better tools and materials, and create higher-quality tutorial content”.

“My goal is to teach and uplift more women and youth by helping them build meaningful skills in crochet and creative entrepreneurship.”
