Glasgow 2026: Sports PS Mwangi Flags Off Team Kenya for Commonwealth Games
NAIROBI, Kenya, July 20 – Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has officially flagged off a formidable delegation of 188 athletes, coaches and technical officials at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
​The highly anticipated games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
​Representing Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya, PS Mwangi expressed immense confidence that the squad will build on the country’s historic track record and solidify its status as a global sporting powerhouse.​
Kenya’s contingent will compete across 12 sporting disciplines, featuring traditional strongholds and diverse events including:​Athletics, Boxing, Weightlifting, Lawn Bowls​Judo, Para-cycling, Basketball and more​
“As one of the world’s greatest sporting nations, Kenya has built an enviable legacy at the Commonwealth Games, consistently producing outstanding performances and finishing among the top countries on the medal table,” said PS Mwangi.

The team’s preparation has been rigorous,with athletes undergoing weeks of intense disciplined training.
Spearheading the veteran presence is Kenya’s decorated world champion javelin thrower, Julius Yego, who shared an optimistic outlook on the team’s prospects.​
“I have a positive mind that I will represent the country well and we will come back with good results,” Yego stated.
“Every athlete wants to represent the country with pride, and I ask Kenyans to continue supporting us because their encouragement gives us the confidence to perform at our best.”​
Yego emphasized that a strategic blend of seasoned experience and emerging young talent will be the catalyst for Kenya’s success in Scotland.​​
National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) First Vice-President Barnaba Korir echoed these sentiments, urging the traveling contingent to act as true ambassadors of the nation.
He reminded the athletes that they carry the hopes, pride, and aspirations of millions of Kenyans back home.​
Zeddy Cherotich, Team Kenya Co-captain extended heartfelt gratitude to Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports for their unwavering support throughout their preparations.
“Your investment in our journey has given us the confidence to prepare well and represent our country in Glasgow,” she said.
She further acknowledged NOCK for organising a residential training camp that brought together athletes from different disciplines.
“Training alongside each other has given us the perfect opportunity to sync our strengths, absorb valuable insights from one another and forge an unbreakable bond that defines the true spirit of Team Kenya”.
The Ministry of Sports expressed total satisfaction with the collaborative pre-games preparations undertaken by the technical bench, management committees, individual sports federations and NOCK.

The ceremony was graced by key stakeholders in Kenya’s sporting fraternity, including NOCK First Vice President Barnaba Korir, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo, Secretary Administration for Sports Evans Achoki, ADAK Acting CEO Peninah Wahome, alongside other distinguished officials.
“Every time the Kenyan flag is raised on the global stage, every time our national anthem is played after a victory, and every time one of our athletes crosses the finish line ahead of the world, Kenya earns global respect, admiration and trust”.
As Team Kenya departs for Glasgow, the nation stands united behind them, eager to see the black, red, green, and white flag hoisted high on the international podium.
