UASU Lecturers Take Strike to the Streets in Nairobi
NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 14 – University lecturers under the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) have taken their ongoing strike to the streets of Nairobi today, demanding the full implementation of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The lecturers began their planned procession at the University of Nairobi’s Graduation Square and are heading towards key government offices, including Parliament, the National Treasury and the Ministry of Education.
The protest comes after negotiations between the lecturers’ unions and the government failed to reach an agreement.
The lecturers rejected the government’s KSh 12 billion counter-offer, saying it was inadequate.
UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga said the offer did not meet the union’s demands and that they want a firm financial commitment for the full implementation of the new CBA.
Government’s positionThe government has maintained that it is ready to continue negotiations.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has also said that arrears from the 2017–2021 and 2021–2025 CBAs have been cleared, and has urged lecturers to return to work while negotiations continue.
Impact on students, The strike continues to disrupt learning in public universities. Some final-year students are reportedly facing difficulties with clearance and missing marks, raising concerns that upcoming graduation ceremonies could be affected.
The situation remains tense as lecturers push for a new agreement, while students wait for the government and unions to reach a lasting solution.
