Amref International University (AMIU) Marks its 6th Graduation Ceremony, Unveils Ultra-Modern Northlands Campus in Ruiru
NAIROBI, Kenya, July 12 – Amref International University (AMIU) marked a transformative milestone with its 6th Graduation Ceremony where 417 graduates were conferred with degrees, diplomas and certificates in various health-related disciplines.
The ceremony brought together senior government officials, development partners, University leadership, faculty, students, alumni and representatives from Amref Health Africa, it marked the beginning of a new chapter for AMIU as a regional hub for health Eleducation, research and innovation.
Themed ‘Localising innovations to strengthen primary healthcare in Africa ‘ the ceremony underscored AMIU commitment to building a future ready health workforce equipped to deliver sustainable, community-centered solutions across the continent.
Kenya’s Former Head of State H.E Uhuru Kenyatta in his remarks delivered by Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta applauded AMIU for Prioritizing homegrown solutions to Africa’s health challenges.
“This campus will be instrumental in equipping our communities with locally driven solutions, it is an affirmation of your commitment to Localising innovation to strengthen primary healthcare across Africa. Innovation, advanced indigenous research, policy diversity, compassion and new technologies this is now your responsibility”, He said.
In a show of commitment in advancing health Education H.E Uhuru Kenyatta awarded 10 fully funded scholarships to support bright, deserving students pursuing careers in health sciences.
Dr. Githinji Gitahi, Group CEO Amref Health Africa while speaking during the graduation ceremony emphasized the importance of expanding Africa-led institutions to localise knowledge and improve access to care.
“We cherish our alliances, global, regional and local it is through working together that we can develop sustainable, contextually relevant education models that shape the resilient health systems in Africa needs”, stated Dr. Gitahi.
Additionally, the Northlands campus a flagship investment in health sciences features cutting-Edge learning spaces, modern laboratories, an innovation hub and a world class library.

“As we launch the new Amref University Campus, I am confident that this institution will drive the transformation of health systems across the continent and beyond by nurturing a workforce that dares to dream beyond limitations and is prepared to build a healthier, more equitable future for all,” said Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, Former First Lady of Kenya.
“Africa’s health future is in your hands from today onwards. You are stepping into a world that urgently needs your ideas, your leadership and your courage to transform systems, drive policy change and ensure that every African has access to quality health care”, She added.
The development was made possible through philanthropic contributions including a landmark gift from philanthropist Ms MacKenzie Scott and sustained support from institutional partners and the Kenyatta family.
Prof Joachim Osur, Vice Chancellor of AMIU underscored the University’s resolve to provide quality, affordable and relevant education rooted in African realities.
“We have strengthen our focus on community-based education, ensuring that learning is embedded in real-life practice and local health contexts”, he said.
The new campus is expected to increase student capacity from 2,000 to 10,000 across physical and virtual learning meeting growing demand for health workforce training that reflects both local and international needs.
“Our graduates are driven to achieve health equity across Africa, ranked third last year for our impact, most AMIU alumni secure jobs within a year of graduation, with many choosing to become self-employed. The future is bright with AMIU”, added Prof Osur.
Amref International University continues to drive progess towards Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 ( Quality Education).
