National Youth Council Elections Postponed over Statutory Demands
NAIROBI, Kenya , July 6 – The National Steering Committee (NSC) on the National Youth Council Elections has inform all delegates, candidates, stakeholders, development partners, and the public that the National Youth Council Elections, initially scheduled to take place from 5th-26th July, 2026 pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 5586 of 17th April, 2026, have been postponed until further notice.
In a statement issued on Friday July 4 2026, NYC stated that the decision was made after careful deliberations with the relevant authorities overseeing the election and has not been taken lightly.
“The postponement is necessary to protect the integrity, credibility, fairness, and orderly conduct of the elections and ensure full compliance with the National Youth Council (Election of Certain Council Members) Regulations, 2021”, reads the statement.
They noted that the postponement will ensure compliance with the outstanding statutory prerequisites, including: A robust, nationwide voter education initiative to ensure informed and inclusive youth participation in accordance with Regulation 21.
Seamless facilitation of voter and candidate registration processes under Regulations 15, 16 and 17.
Comprehensive appointment and training of election officials in line with Regulations 24 and 25.
The acquisition and deployment of an election management system, as stipulated in Regulations 33 and 34.
“The NSC is acutely aware of the profound significance these elections hold for Kenya’s youth and acknowledges the substantial commitment, preparation and resources already invested by aspirants and partners”.
“While we regret the inconvenience and uncertainty this development may cause, we are confident that this measured approach is essential to reinforcing public trust and delivering an election that is beyond reproach”.
Additionally, The Committee noted that it remains fully committed to delivering a transparent, free, fair and inclusive electoral process in strict compliance with the law, the applicable electoral framework and the principles of good governance.
Further, Revised election timelines will be formally communicated in due course via the Kenya Gazette and through the official channels of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, and the National Youth Council (NYC).
