Zubeidah Kananu re-elected Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) President

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 25 – The Standard Group Journalist Zubeidah Kananu retained her seat as the President of Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) after getting 72 votes against her contender Yvonne Okwara of Citizen TV who got 58 votes in the highly contested race.

The election was overseen by Sophie Kaibiria an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Ms Kananu will be deputised by Francis Openda who was elected unopposed during the nominations.

“I thank members for overwhelming support and the trust they have bestowed on me to continue leading the Guild, I will continue to serve with commitment this win has strengthen me to resolve fight for media freedom and editorial independence”, said Ms Kananu.

Trustees include Ruth Nesoba, Martin Masai and Nganga Mbugua, While Linda Bach, Council member print, Millicent Awuor, Council member TV and Kenfrey Kiberenge, Council member online were elected unopposed.

Other seats that were contested include Council Member for Academia position where Dr. Julius Bosire of Technical University of Kenya and Nathan Masambu of Daystar University squared it out.

In addition, Agnes Mwangangi from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) challenged incumbent Toepista Nabusoba an independent editor and formerly of the same station for the Council Member for Radio position.

The new Executive Council will serve a two-year term from 2025 to 2027 in line with KEG Constitution.
