CS Murkomen commissions Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Standard Duty Vehicles (MRAPS) at GSU Headquarters
NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7... The Cabinet Secretary Interior and National Administration has commissioned a new batch of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Standard Duty Vehicles at General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters, Ruaraka.
The acquisition of the modern equipment after a ten-year break is part of Government flagship program to deploy technology to combat crime.
“This is a great milestone in institutional reforms to build the capacity of our officers with the latest technology to tackle emerging crimes, complex situations and secure our borders, these vehicles will assist in fighting cattle rusting and banditry in northern parts of the country and other far-flung areas”, said CS Interior Kipchumba Murkomen.
CS Murkomen noted that all police officers will undergo continuous training to keep up with the evolving crime trends and technology lauding officers working in difficult conditions that have managed to address the banditry menace, which has gone down by 70 percent.
The commissioning was witnessed by Internal Security PS Dr Raymond Omollo, NPSC chairman Eliud Kinuthia, Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja, DIGs Eliud Lagat (NPS) and Gilbert Masengeli (APS), DCI Director Amin Mohamed and host GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni among other senior officers.

“I assure officers of Interior ministry’s full support to discharge their duties without intimidation or harassment, however, a few elements who have gone contrary to the constitution and the NPS Standing Orders must be dealt with through the laid-down procedures”, stated CS.
In addition he said internal disciplinary mechanisms should correct the officers and work hand in hand with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the NPS and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to ensure that there is a disciplined service.
“The ministry is in the process of implementing the National Taskforce on Police Reforms report, which deals with the issues of welfare, including mental health”.
“As we continue with the reform agenda, we are addressing issues of resource gaps, renumeration of our officers and the medical insurance cover among other concerns”.
